Umholi we Africa

Public Leadership Fellowship

Igniting the next generation of public sector leaders in Africa

Umholi we Africa (UwA) Fellowship is a two-year fellowship that places young people in Special Advisor roles in a Ministerial office (senior officials) and in intergovernmental organizations.

The first Cohort consists of ten fellows.

  THEORY OF CHANGE

The UwA Fellowship aligns and contributes towards two outcomes in our sector’s ToC: one “a pipeline of ethical and competent leaders for public leadership positions in Africa” and two, “a mechanism to identify, train and support smart capable and ethical candidates for public office”.  Through a unique approach the Fellowship places fellows directly in ministerial offices or similar where they have opportunity to contribute to policy and access to connect with different people to grow their network. We envisage this as a model to “fast-tracking” youth’s opportunities to occupy leadership positions in government.

Our theory of change:
We believe that if high-potential young Africans identify a like-minded community, are able to clearly see the potential to participate and effect policy and identify the opportunity for personal and technical skills growth then they will choose careers in politics and the public sector. And ultimately inspire to change the face of the public sector workforce to one that is diverse, competent and includes young people.
